Abstract

This study evaluates the potential of non-edible plant extracts as eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors for mild steel pipelines in acidic environments. Extracts obtained from Cassia occidentalis, Lantana camara, and Ricinus communis were investigated in a 2 M hydrochloric acid medium. Elemental analysis confirmed iron as the dominant constituent of the mild steel, while phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, and saponins that promote protective surface adsorption. Corrosion rates and inhibition efficiencies were determined using the gravimetric weight loss method across varying exposure times. The results showed that inhibition efficiency increased with inhibitor presence but varied with exposure time, indicating an adsorption-controlled inhibition process. Among the extracts studied, Cassia occidentalis exhibited the highest inhibition efficiency, followed by Lantana camara and Ricinus communis. These findings demonstrate that non-edible plant extracts offer an effective, low-cost, and environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional synthetic corrosion inhibitors for industrial applications.
