Abstract

Kaempferia pulchra is an herbaceous plant of the Zingiberaceae family that has received increasing attention due to its secondary metabolite content and potential bioactivity. This narrative review aims to critically evaluate the extraction strategies used and their relationship with the types of bioactive compounds and biological activities reported. A qualitative literature review was conducted using major scientific databases to identify peer-reviewed studies on extraction techniques, solvent systems, and bioactivity. Dominant secondary metabolites were identified, including diterpenoids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and terpenoids. There is an increasing trend towards the use of modern extraction methods, which demonstrate higher efficiency and shorter extraction times than conventional methods. However, a critical evaluation of the available literature reveals notable gaps in the standardization of research methodologies, particularly regarding the types of solvents and extraction techniques employed. Moreover, studies that directly compare different extraction approaches used on K. pulchra remain limited. In conclusion, the existing studies have discovered the potential of K. pulchra as a source of bioactive compounds with the variation of methods. Future studies are needed to isolate the key compounds for direct application in natural pharmaceutical products.
